Condx sounded very good. I could hear stateside stations working EU but I could only hear about have of the EU stations on the beverage. I could hear them on a compromise (short length) Carolina Windom. I tried tuning the Carolina Windom designed for 80 meters and found the TS-590S handled the high SWR very well. I tuned around and was totally surprised to be able to make a few contacts. I worked K4RO and a few other stateside contacts to the North-East and Mid-West. Total bummer that I didn't figure out this compromise antenna worked on the 160 meter band a day earlier. I could have made 160 meter contacts during RAC contest. I guess you live and learn. A compromise antenna is better than none at all.

I have not been terribly active this year but I felt like I just couldn't miss out on this years last event: Big Stew. It was great to exchange MX and HNY with friends near and far.
160M never ceases to amaze me, and vex me as well. Initially my enthusiasm was damped by S9+ noise (see my QRZ page for a picture) EVEN ON MY RX antenna. Of course it was worse on my TX antenna. Often the noise will subside in the evening, but this time it was relentless from dusk until dawn. I was going to hang it up as I heard no EU at my sunset, although I did hear D4Z briefly. Quick break for dinner, and then I resolved to S&P until whenever I couldn't stand it any longer. Imagine my surprise when I started hearing EU sunrise. For me and my pipsqueak of a station this is always a big deal. It was short, and it was spotty, but by God it was real and I got some 20 pointers in the log! Did not hear past the US west coast near my sunrise unfortunately, but I was still happy from the earlier propagation.
I even managed a short little run for 30 mins or so starting around 1145Z--hilarious! Log checkers do you worst (and seriously thank you Boring Organizers for doing what you do!)
DX worked: DL, GW, KP2, OM, PJ2, XE, VE.
See you in the next one, hopefully killing some noise in the interim.

Class is M/M since I operated assisted and SO2R. I like the fact that everyone works everyone. Missed NT, NU and PE, got YT on 20m thanks to VY1RAC.

Several UA stations for 19 points. Started to hear EU a bit before sunset and they could hear me a little later. Some, particularly northern EU, had good signals. A good Stew to finish off the year!

Conditions worked well the first night. No so good from my QTH during the day on Saturday. Struggle to get Canadian stations. I'm antenna challenged using only a ground mounted vertical with radials and an OCF for 80 and 40 meters. Never heard NT and YT. I was hoping to work those RAC sections. I was chasing W4SV from the Georgia Contest Group on contestonlinescore.com, we changed leads several times. However, he clearly stretched the lead with logging many mults and especially so on the first night on 160 meters. I do not have a 160 antenna. I was also keeping an eye on WV4P on SSB. He did very well. I will come up with a better plan next year and extend the operating time as this is a short 24 hour contest. It was good to work a few TCG members. This was a good tuneup and practice for the TCG 2020 Radio Active Award.
